Dr. M.Z. Mahmud was appointed as the Director of the newly created Department of Logistics and Health Commodities on 25th August 2014. Before then, he had been on the rank of a Chief Medical Officer in the NPHCDA since 1st January 2008.
Initially, the defunct National Programme on Immunization (NPI) employed Dr. M.Z. Mahmud in 1999 as an Assistant Director until its merger with the NPHCDA in 2007. He has been Head, Supplemental Immunization Activities (1999-2004), Zonal Coordinator North West Zone (2004-2010), Head Immunization (2010-2013) and Head Routine Immunization and Essential Services Support (2013-2014)
He has attended several local and international courses such as Data Management; Strategic Management and Leadership course; WHO Regional Vaccinology course; Training on Polio Endgame strategy; Advanced Management Course; and also participated in the planning and facilitation of the Nigeria MLM course for immunization, surveillance, communications and logistics.
Dr. Mahmud is a medical graduate (MBBS 1986) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria who commenced in clinical practice and general surgery in the late '80s and the '90s. He also has an MPH from the University of Lagos, Lagos (2003-2004). He has also written a number of publications which include “Assessment of injection safety in Lagos”; “Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication in Nigeria”; “Challenge of using administrative data for monitoring routine immunization system performance in Nigeria”; among others.
He is an active member of many professional associations such as Nigeria Medical Association, etc.
He is happily married with children.
