Yesterday, Thursday 11th September 2025, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), led by, Executive Director/CEO, Dr. Muyi Aina hosted the flag-off of the distribution of medical equipment and essential drugs to states. This event is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to revitalize Primary Health care, to ensure every citizen has access to equitable, quality, and affordable primary health care services.
The Honorable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, who flagged-off the distribution of the medical equipment and essential drugs to states, described the event as a promise kept, saying, “This is not just an event, because two years ago we embarked on an ambitious effort to revitalize the primary health care system setting targets and now we are seeing that promise being kept … I believe that with this effort the access to quality health services will be much closer to our people no matter where they live and no matter who they are.”
Dr. Aina, in his remarks, said that, 56 different categories of primary healthcare-related medical equipment which include, diagnostic equipment like binocular microscopes and autoclave machines, delivery beds, ultrasound machines, incubator, laptop, computers and more will be distributed to 500 PHC facilities across the country.
In addition, 8 different categories of essential health commodities, ranging from anti-malarials, anti-helminthics, analgesics, uterotonics, hematinics, anti-infectives, blood pressure medicine, blood sugar medicine, and family planning commodities, will be distributed to the 774 local governments in Nigeria.
The procurement of these equipment and commodities was funded by the Federal Government through appropriation— (money that the President approved) and contributions from donors. Over 9 billion Naira was spent on the equipment while commodities cost over 14 billion Naira.
In his parting shot, Dr. Aina, encouraged states to build on this momentum and invest more of their own resources in equipping PHC facilities and staffing them.
The event was attended by other heads of MDAs, donors, partners, and other stakeholders, including the FMOH (SWAp Coordinating Office), NPHCDA Directors and staff, and the media.
