Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM)

Objectives

1
To facilitate the provision of timely and effective treatment for acute malnutrition, reducing morbidity and mortality rates.
2
To ensure that treatment services are accessible to the greatest possible number of clients in the community who are acutely malnourished.

The programme achieves its objectives through community outreaches and mobilization, empowering communities with nutrition education and sensitization to promote early detection, referral, and treatment of malnourished cases; providing support to facilities that offer inpatient care (for severe acute malnutrition with complications) and outpatient therapeutic care (for severe acute malnutrition without complications), supplementary feeding programs (for moderate acute malnutrition), and community-based services to manage acute malnutrition (including home-based care and rehabilitation); connecting families with other relevant services, such as immunization, maternal health, and social services.

Overall, PHC plays a vital role in IMAM by providing comprehensive, community-based care that addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of children with acute malnutrition.
