The Big Catch-up implementation in Nigeria
The Big Catch-up was a global initiative launched by Immunization Agenda 2030 partners in April 2023 to close immunity gaps caused by backsliding of immunization coverage during the COVID-19 pandemic, while supporting recovery and acceleration of progress. The Goal was to reach and vaccinate un-immunized and under-immunized children up to at least five years of age. The Big Catchup was implemented in 200 prioritized LGAs across 30 states and the FCT shown in the map below in three rounds of intensified activities with at least 4 weeks in between each each round. Over 3 million under five children were targeted to be reached in 3 rounds of intensification activities across the identified LGAs. Â
Strategies for the Big Catchup
The strategy adopted for the Big Catchup in each of the identified LGA was determined by the level of insecurity in these LGAs which affected accessibility. Based on this, the LGAs were categorised into three groups
